Animal Control Ordinance – Valdosta and Lowndes County

Lowndes County, what is the point of having an ordinance if you don’t enforce it? I called about a dog being transported on the toolbox of a truck, and the 911 operator argued with me! She said she didn’t know if it was against the law. IT’S NOT MY PROBLEM YOU DON’T KNOW THE LAW! Don’t argue with me, do your job and report it to the proper authority.

I stopped the dog owner and tried to educate him before calling the police, but he said he KNEW it as against the law and didn’t care (probably because IT’S NOT ENFORCED). So he just got in his truck and went down Bemiss.

I’m extremely disappointed in both the dog owner and Lowndes County for not acting responsibly. Lowndes County, it WILL be your problem when the dog causes an accident at 55 MPH.

Lowndes County ordinance (pdf):
Section XVI f. Transporting in Open Bed of Vehicles. Any animal being transported in an open bed, platform or other open area of a motor vehicle or trailer from which the animal can easily escape or be ejected, shall be confined in a humane manner inside a securely latched or locked animal carrier or restrained by a minimum of two tethers, with one tether each being scurely affixed to the opposite side of such open bed, platform, or other open area, and both tethers being scurely attached to the collar or harness of such animal. It is a violation of this provision for the owner or custodian of an animal, as well as the driver of the motor vehicle being used to transport an animal, to refuse of fail to confine and restrain the animal being transported as required by this provision.

City of Valdosta ordinance (pdf) Section 11-6025 F.

Update: I spoke with Linda Patelski, the director of the animal shelter, and she said that 911 shouldn’t be screening their phone calls. She plans to review the 911 recording and take appropriate action.

On August 26, 2011 my work competed in the United Way’s Amazing Race in Valdosta against 16 other teams. The race started at 8:15 and we finished in first place at 10:50. We made the front page of the Valdosta Daily Times the next day.
