I listed my motorcycle on craigslist and got a spam email with a link to FLVDirect.us.

If its the same one I will be there today to buy it
Obviously some sort of spam or scam. I didn’t click the link, I just wrote back.
From: Darren McCall
To: jenevaxknxd@aol.comYes, it is the same one. What time would you like to come today?

The link takes you to a website with a video that says it is “7:53″ long. If you click the play button it says, “To watch this video please install FLVDirect”. At the top of the screen it says, “You need FLV DIRECT VIDEO VIEWER installed in order to download and watch this video. Please go here and install a free one now”. Someone told me they downloaded the software and installed it and the video on the website still doesn’t play.
Erin left a comment with this link that explains everything:

I need for an individual or individuals to provide at least 50 sign ups/downloads a day from flvdirect.com. Traffic must be from USA ONLY. Sign Ups are required to download and install FLV Player and you will be paid $1 each time a valid download is made.
I will pay $1 for each Real Qualified Conversion, and an extra $7.50 per 50 leads generated in a day,
So for every 50 downloads you get $7.50 on top of the $1 per download for each day.
…
In your bid, let me know how you plan to promote to achieve 50 downloads a day. I will then supply you a link with tracking code so we can track your progress. This could be a on going project if you generate leads regularly.

yea, definately a scam. I posted a “wanted” to buy something and got the exact same e-mail response today.
Thanks for posting. I received the same response today and thought it looked fishy. Copied the link and searched for flvdirect.us. Appreciate you putting the info out there about this.
I saw the same, today.
received emails with exact same text in response to Craig’s List for-sale ad. Did NOT click on link to see video.
The same thing happened to me. Email came from an @aim.com address. The first email that they sent to me simply said “you still offering?”
I just got the SAME response from issachorner756@aol.com.
Good think I did a little search before wasting my time.
Yeah I got this EXACT same email sequence today from an aim.com address.
Yeah got this exact same thing today, I clicked the link and it wanted me to install a missing codec to view the video lmao…some people
The same thing happened to me today exactly as described. I didn’t download the plug in or watch the video. It didn’t look right.
I got the very same email and googled the link and found this page. I’m glad I didn’t click the link. Here’s the message I got:

Had this happen to me today an email from elaineqnev@aol.com on craigslist. Wierd didn’t click on link and emailed back to get better link, will see what comes through.
Me too! The email they used was this one christeen56175@aol.com
Same wording and everything.
I got the same one today. I did click the link, but didn’t watch the video – I was leery of downloading the player (which I didn’t) and emailed back to upload the video to You Tube – of course I never got a response.
Thanks for posting all this – I just got the exact same sequence in Atlanta. What losers!!!! I think I’ll send the e-mail address they used to all the spammers I know of!

Ya I got the same thing today as everyone else. Was from an aim.com address. I googled and came across this page. Thanks Darren McCall.
I received the same message from pamelamejia593@aol.com. I did not respond.
I got the same message from lacijimenes664@aol.com. Thanks for posting this.
got the same e-mail today from vivianxav@aol.com but didn’t click on the link, I just replied that it’s the same since I knew it was a scam anyway.
Hello All,
Thanks for info. I got same one but actually clicked the link and download the flv player from flvdirect.com. sorry, my first sale on craigslist. then I found that its a scam. but I m worried if that was a virus or something. Is my personal info under threat ? if it was just time wasting then I be fine. please advise.
Received same spam email from Craigslist today. I highlighted the link, copied the address, and searched google. That’s how I found your website. Thanks for posting the scam. We kinda thought so.
I got the same message today from a CL ad. I did click the link (in my defense, I hadn’t had any coffee yet) and thank goodness for Firefox popup blocker it didn’t prompt me to download any players so nothing was installed. After some google research I think I’ve discovered why they are spamming: http://www.freelancer.com/projects/Marketing-Bulk-Marketing/Pay-per-sign-download-per.html
It also sounds like the player installs some malware based on the google search.
It is a scam, do not download flvplayer.exe or setup.exe for the FLV player. The file itself is infected with Adware.Mediapass – Scanned with MalwareBytes.
I got this twice on two seperate new listings posted recently on craiglist. Luckily I thought it was strange someone would have a video of a specific suitcase they were looking for. Haha, seems like there are WAY too many people doing this.
Just got this exact same email response to a listing I created. Bogus!
I got this same message today. I am selling a chair on Craigslist. I clicked on the link but didn’t download anything because I pretty leery of things like that. I emailed the person back and told them that I don’t feel comfortable putting unknown software onto my computer and asked them to send me a picture of the item instead. I then decided to search for FLV Direct online and came to this site. Will my computer be infected because I just clicked on the link? I have a Mac.
This also just happened to me. I got the email from leandrapark7861@aol.com.
Someone’s got a lot of addresses from aol. Thanks, TimeWarnerNightmare.
altazap8c@aol.com was the name I got today
Jessica, no. It doesn’t look like clicking the link does any harm to your computer.
If you did download the player, I would try and remove it. Listed as malware on MS site -http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=Adware%3AWin32%2FFlvDirect
I received the same exact response as well to a Canon MFD I’m trying to sell. When I looked up flv-direct.us on whois.com, the domain was registered on 14-Jun with a bogus administrator name and a different website. Very shady. My email came from dorthy01562@aol.com.
Got the exact response today for a craigslist item for sale. Right-clicked the link to see the address under properties. Googled the flv-direct.us and this is the first web site that came up. Knew it must have been some sort of scam so I didn’t click the link. Thought it was maybe a virus? Man, people sure are weird.
I received the same message sequence this morning from juliettalane115@aol.com. Glad I googled to find this. What a pain!
Yep, got one of these today as well from susan15429@aol.com – My Yahoo Spam filter actually caught it at first. Thanks for putting this info out there! Definitely not legit.

I was asked to play a video at flvdirect.us, which I did not. I’ve had such good experiences on craigslist, it’s too bad there are scams like this out there. I hope my email address won’t get spammed now.
Yeah — another scammy site pushing more adware junk.
The player also installs contextual advertising software on your system. (double underlined links in pages that normally has no advertising)
It may also cause your system to post these links in your signatures on blogs/forums you belong to.
Most Antivirus/antispyware programs should rip it out if anyone installed it.
Malwarebytes has a free version of antimalware which works well.
Microsoft security essentials, AVG, Panda Cloud antivirus, Antivir if looking for free antivirus. (only install one though!)
Like most of you did — checking the link before clicking & not going to site was good to do.
Not installin the player was the next best thing.
Stay safe out there!
I also got this exact message today. The email address was adrienobs65@aol.com.
Thanks for bring attention to this!
e-mail with link came from Cyprus (based on X-AOL-IP)
Same thing here. Listed a MoBo+AMD CPU combo for sale and the same sequence of events took place. So this is still going on as of today
Got the same from winnie31758@aim.com. Luckily couldn’t watch the video from my iPhone. I did click the link.
I have received two of these bogus responses to ads so far here in Anchorage. Thanks for posting this info!
I forwarded the message to CL, and I’m not sure if they have a “scams” section where we can post our experiences with the latest evil plots, but it would be great if they did. This one was a little more creative than some of the other scams I’ve seen.
Selling my car and got the same thing from tory21714@aim.com
Got the same thing. Downloaded it and video didn’t play. Uninstalled items and ran Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware 1.45

Got the same thing today from jessia69188@aim.com
I got the same email from natalieojz7s@aol.com yesterday. I didn’t follow the link – I replied to the email that I wasn’t clicking an email link and if they couldn’t tell it was the right backpack from the pictures I posted, then it wasn’t the one they were looking for. My husband thought I was rude, so I looked at the link properties and googled it and found this blog. Looks like my instincts are better than his.
I got the exact same thing today from stephaniavcf73@aol.com
I just received the exact same thread – this was from the following email address: joannwhitehead27@aol.com
Got it from kieshais2q@aol.com today.
i received the same message and link today in reference to buying a wii.. at first i thought it was strange for them to send a video.. then i thought “who doesn’t know what a wii is??”
