Dell Inspiron 1545
Windows Vista Home Basic

Problem:
Install hangs on “Completing Installation”.
Booting into Safe Mode hangs on “crcdisk.sys”.

Solution:
Changed SATA operations in BIOS from “ACHI” to “ATA”.

This is a problem with Vista and XP. You need to load SATA drivers during Windows install, or set change the SATA mode in BIOS.

You’re a life saver, so many hours wasted trying all sorts of combinations.

Thanks a ton for the info! Sure enough, this solved the major issue I’d faced when reinstalling Vista on a co-worker’s laptop – I’ll pass it along if anyone else asks in the future!

Bingo! After making the switch no problem loading Vista Home Premium.
